The admission (as I understand) is now free, and if you live near Athens, do come see the performances! Each short play is less than 15 or so minutes long, and very whimsical. (I wanted to be a part of it, but my hip surgery gets in the way.)</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"> I believe Monday, May 7th (?) is the launch date of my web site, so please be patient with any tweaks to the blog: I'm planning on having it linked directly to the web site, hopefully no interference with how you find it or see it. (Fingers crossed!)</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"> If you're in Athens on May 14, please come see me at Union Arts downstairs from Hoffa's.... </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"> OK, I know I've posted this before, but it wasn't in color then. This will be one of my displays in my gallery show at Union Arts in Athens, Ohio, (downstairs from Hoffa's Records, across from Jackie-O's and the Union) opening on Monday, May 14. I'll try to get some food and stuff there, and if anyone wants to contribute a bit of yummy food to the occasion, please feel free!! I'd be most grateful. If you remember, share this date with your friends around town. (The showing will go for about a month, I think, but I'll definitely be there on the opening day.) </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"> I'm really hoping my new web site will launch this coming week, as well. I'm still learning the ins and outs of navigation and management.... Yesterday I really did have a Bad Attitude about my confidence in running a web site. Today, feeling more in control.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"> There may be a bit of a changed look to my blog site when my web site is up and running, because the blog will link directly to my web site..... While this means very little to me technologically speaking, it might affect the way the blog appears. I'm pretty darn sure that you can view my blog exactly as you have before, simply it may re-direct you to my web. (I don't really know how any of this works, but I'll let you know when this changeover occurs.) Anyway, come visit me at Union Arts on May 14 if you can! Thanks!</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-rA71msh7Xwg/T5xsEKeKEGI/AAAAAAAAA3s/tdRrjYgH6hE/s1600/license+88x31.png" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-rA71msh7Xwg/T5xsEKeKEGI/AAAAAAAAA3s/tdRrjYgH6hE/s1600/license+88x31.png" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br />

</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"> Yesterday I led a kids' art workshop, focusing on cartoons and graphic novels. Great fun. Several of the kids asked me to come back again, and now I'm scheduled for next week as well. I think I had as much fun as the kids seemed to have.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"> The picture on top is what I drew for them, then taped it up against a bright window to trace, first forwards, then backwards. It's a way of maintaining the consistency of an image. (It's actually something I just learned from a cartoonist friend of mine recently. This is the alternative to a light box.) </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"> My drawing room is also the guest bedroom, so I get a full corner of the room for my drawing gear. It's a messy sight, but I occasionally thrive in this room, a room without distractions, a room where I feel comfortable sketching and inking anything I want. Lovely. There is a window by my desk, and I use it often to trace images. I have to kneel on the floor while I pencil in an image, which is sometimes uncomfortable. Soon I will own a real light box! </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"> This is another excerpt from my new book, <strong><em>Existential Fish</em></strong>. </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"> Both Charles the toad and the Fish are pets belonging to the character Auggie. I'm not really sure how these two came to be, but I was surprised to find a very similar-looking fish in one of my sketch books from back in 1997. I was unhappy with my housemate back then; (mostly I just wanted to live alone, and his mere presence annoyed me). In order to amuse myself, I drew a couple skits called Housemates, in which the guy's housemate is an annoying goldfish. The bit with Judge Judy was actually something straight from my 1997 sketch book (which I didn't even remember until a couple months ago while browsing my old sketch books.) I think I chose Judge Judy because my housemate back then <em>LOVED</em> watching Judge Judy. I think that was the reason I finally moved out.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br />

At left is my old logo, from about 10 years ago, or so. I'm still working on the new logo, but I find it's more difficult to design a logo than I really thought. Above are some of my attempts at an image from this evening.<br />
<br />
I want the logo to be simple, memorable, have a little splash of color, and show off my art in a playful way. At first I thought I'd just use an image I've already got, but none of the good ones were really suited for the tiny 3.5 x 2 in, space. <br />
<br />
So. New idea: Guy pushing a big pencil around and making an "s". Then: guy carrying a big pencil like a fishing rod, casually across shoulder. Then: maybe guy is skipping. Maybe guy looks like I used to look, with shaggy hair and beard. Maybe he's dancing around or something....<br />
I'll show off the new business card logo when it's ready. (Hopefully in time for my new website!)<br />

This is the second installment of "50 Ways to Die in the Grand Canyon" (2001). It's about me getting past my challenging fear of travel. <br />
It's a work in progress, and I'm pleased to say that the last two days were another good success story in overcoming my travel fears. Some of you are well aware of my difficulty traveling (even though I used to absolutely <strong><em>love</em></strong> to travel!). When I say "difficulty" traveling, that's really an understatement. It has become, over the years, a full-fledged phobia of mine.<br />
This Thursday, B. and I drove to Columbus for a doctor appointment. The weather was fair, and in a moment of spontaneity I suggested we continue driving that day to her parents' house in Pennsylvania to surprise them. (I missed their 50th Wedding Anniversary the previous weekend because I was sick. I probably made myself sick to get out of traveling.) The drive was good, and B. is incredibly patient with me: She'll read aloud to me and tell jokes and engage in conversation to take my mind off my anxieties. There were certainly moments of anxieties that popped up during the two days in Pennsylvania, but I was able to (mostly) keep them in check. <br />
Goals for the future: Road trips to see friends in Pittsburgh, family in Ann Arbor, and see friends in Seattle, WA. (Perhaps one day I'll even fly over the ocean again!)<br />

</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"> Creating humor from my anxieties is an enormous driving force in my cartoons. My anxieties can take on a life of their own and follow me like my own shadow. I'm often overwhelmed to the point of despair, having such a companion as this, but here's the up-side: Without my anxieties, most of my cartoons would never have been drawn.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"> The above cartoon, the first of a short series, is based on a real "vacation" that nearly incapacitated me. Turning my fear of pain and discomfort into a parody or caricature of true horror, I console myself, treat myself to a smile, and realize, once again, the worst of it is (temporarily) in the past. There is no part of this story of the Grand Canyon trip that is not true. I wish I'd been able to draw this BEFORE the trip, but it wasn't until after the trip that I could tackle it. The trip itself was wonderfully beautiful and exhilarating, but the anticipation of all the horrors that were possible nearly crushed me. The day before we boarded the plane to Phoenix, I was carefully weighing the option of falling down a staircase and breaking my leg, just to relieve myself of the inevitable terror of the Grand Canyon.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"> In the last decade or so, I've come to accept that there is a part of me that will always find anxiety somewhere, and that I will struggle to overcome it. Sometimes I win, sometimes I don't. I try to go easy on myself when my anxieties get the better of me, and I try to reclaim my ground by drawing an honest story that makes the whole scenario laughable. It doesn't really matter if anyone else finds it funny; I'm not drawing this for anyone but me, and I think it's helping. I would be a terribly boring cartoonist without my anxieties.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br />
